Wisconsin lawmakers are once again pushing for legislation that would allow residents to subscribe to privately developed small solar projects on brownfields, commercial rooftops or underused farmland.

The divisive proposal has been met with a flurry of support from environmental advocates seeking more renewable power in Wisconsin and groups frustrated with rising energy prices, as well as opposition from many of the state’s largest utility companies — which control much of Wisconsin’s power grid.

Similar efforts proposed in the last two legislative sessions failed to cross the finish line.
